Samuel de Champlain’s Voyages

Map of Samuel de Champlain voyages
On these years of celebrating Samuel de Champlain’s exploration of New France, many want to see a map of where he actually traveled. And because we could not find a good one on the internet, we have chosen to create one - a really nice and complete one! Why? you may ask. After all, we have the mission of bringing interesting news to travelers, and a map of Samuel de Champlain’s voyages looks more like history than travel! Well, the answer is that we will be talking a lot about Samuel de Champlain’s discovery of Lake Champlain next year, as Vermont will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the event. And we simply thought this was nice background information to launch the celebrations - here at Travel-Vermont.net!
It is actually amazing to realize how extensively Samuel de Champlain traveled in these regions from 1603 to 1636, 12 voyages all together… from Nova Scotia to Cape Cod and all the way west to Lake Ontario and Lake Huron! And in Vermont, may you ask? Well, Samuel de Champlain traveled down the Richelieu River to Lake Champlain in July 1609. He first landed on Isle La Motte, at the North of the lake and then traveled down all the way to either Crown Point or Ticonderoga (historians are not sure), where he fought against the Iroquois, at the end of July 1609. Later, the surroundings of the lake would see French settlements… but that’s another story!

And if you are interested in the history of this region and period, see our Summer 2009 Historic Tour, “When this land was called New France” - a 6-day historic tour to Quebec City, the Richelieu River and Lake Champlain (Vermont/NY) and discover 150 years of little-known history!
You can also learn more about the first contacts between native Americans and Europeans, by attending the September 25th 2008 conference on this subject, at the Vergennes Opera House.

    Hello Jimmy,
This is a good question… because noone is sure when he was born… not even which year he was born… or where he was born!

  5. Devonne says:

the year he was born was 1567 in brouage france i am also doing a school project and it sucks lol

  6. Christine says:

    Hello there,
I was serious… Experts agree that the date of birth of Samuel de Champlain is not known. So… if you found the date of 1567, it is wrong. Moreover, experts now believe that 1567 is very unlikely to be his date of birth and they think that he was more likely born around 1580.
Tell me more if you would like about your school project… why don’t you like it?

  7. okwarakon says:

Wow, everyone has this wrong. How come in the Governor Generals Residence they have him as the First Governor General of Canada? The only person to serve 2 terms, with a gap of 4 years in between because he was in Jail back in France? That is what was said when we toured the Governor Generals mansion. Now he is the ONLY one that doesn’t have a family crest as well, although we were told during the tour that he was given one after his death. Strange but true. Skennen’kowa

  17. Alex says:

  18. senfhbsldfgs says:

christine what makes experts think that he was most likely born in the 1580’s? I also need a map of his voyage from france to Quebec.

  19. Christine says:

I have not read anything indicating that he stopped somewhere on the way from France to Quebec.
He started his expeditions from Honfleur, a nice little harbor in Normandy.
Good question on why experts think he was more likely born in the 1580s. I don’t remember reading the specific answer to that question, but I would have to say - from my readings - that they came to that conclusion based on the dates of his first expedition to the Carribeans, and expeditions to North America, in relation to his likely age at the time, and how it related to the known dates of historic events such as the death of Henry IV, and also what we know about the life of his father and uncle.

  22. Surya Rhiva says:

well, how do you really know that he wasn’t born on the year of 1567 ?
same here, i am doing a project on him, i did find that he was born that year.
I wish i had a hot tub time machine so i can really know when he was born :P :L

  23. Christine says:

Because all the serious historians have written about this fact , iin many papers, books and publications, ncluding a big book, dedicated to Champlan and written a couple of years ago, by a group of historians, and which sits right on my shelves at home!
