wow i never knew he has explore lots of lands . its sad that we dont know the real date when h e was born ………..
I only want to greet all the people of quebec and the “fans” of monsieur Champlain.
I’m doing a school project and need to know the date when he was born.
This is a good question… because noone is sure when he was born… not even which year he was born… or where he was born!
the year he was born was 1567 in brouage france i am also doing a school project and it sucks lol
I was serious… Experts agree that the date of birth of Samuel de Champlain is not known. So… if you found the date of 1567, it is wrong. Moreover, experts now believe that 1567 is very unlikely to be his date of birth and they think that he was more likely born around 1580.
Tell me more if you would like about your school project… why don’t you like it?
Wow, everyone has this wrong. How come in the Governor Generals Residence they have him as the First Governor General of Canada? The only person to serve 2 terms, with a gap of 4 years in between because he was in Jail back in France? That is what was said when we toured the Governor Generals mansion. Now he is the ONLY one that doesn’t have a family crest as well, although we were told during the tour that he was given one after his death. Strange but true. Skennen’kowa
Iam doing a school project can you please tell me what samuel de champlain named Albany? and what he also named new york? iam very lost in finding either of these things thank you so much
He actualy was born in 1567 but it is not certain.
I think he was born in 1567 i am doing a project on him and that’s what i found
I need to know facts about his trip in 1609.
(He is so confusing!)
Well, chapter 9, page 153 of this book “Voyages of Samuel de Champlain, 1604-1618: With a Map and Two Plans”, you can read the description of his 1609 trip
the date is circa 1570
im doing a project too! sos its sooooo confusing………….hey christie, u seem like an expert……………….help me!!!
What do you need? How can I help?
do any of you guys know when he was born?
where did he go on a voyage and what were his discoveries i cant seem to find the information
christine what makes experts think that he was most likely born in the 1580’s? I also need a map of his voyage from france to Quebec.
I have not read anything indicating that he stopped somewhere on the way from France to Quebec.
He started his expeditions from Honfleur, a nice little harbor in Normandy.
Good question on why experts think he was more likely born in the 1580s. I don’t remember reading the specific answer to that question, but I would have to say – from my readings – that they came to that conclusion based on the dates of his first expedition to the Carribeans, and expeditions to North America, in relation to his likely age at the time, and how it related to the known dates of historic events such as the death of Henry IV, and also what we know about the life of his father and uncle.
I am doing a school project on Samuel De Champlain, and this site was helpful!
I am glad to know it could help. Thanks for sharing the feedback!
well, how do you really know that he wasn’t born on the year of 1567 ?
same here, i am doing a project on him, i did find that he was born that year.
I wish i had a hot tub time machine so i can really know when he was born 😛 :L
Because all the serious historians have written about this fact , iin many papers, books and publications, ncluding a big book, dedicated to Champlan and written a couple of years ago, by a group of historians, and which sits right on my shelves at home!
Thanks for the map. This is by far the best map we’ve found on Champlain’s voyages. Clear and comprehensive, with all the voyages on one map. Thanks for sharing!
thanks even though we will never know when he was really born
I am unable to download your map (.pdf) of Champlain’s travels? Could you email me the file?
lol project here too. he isn’t that confusing. it’s mostly just trying to reach hudsons bay and lake huron. he didn’t get too far but he was pretty interesting. his forward thinking on the treatment of natives as companions not to be exploited was very revolutionary for the time.
I need to know the departure dates of Champlain’s voyages. Can anyone OR anything help me out?
I am also doing a school project on him. He gives me head aches.
